Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
